Careers in Arboriculture & Urban Forestry

While arboriculture and urban forestry are often housed in forestry or horticulture programs in colleges and university, students entering the working world end up in a variety of industries. An urban forestry is required to wear many hats throughout the day as they interact with a variety of professionals: arborists, urban planners, recreation managers, public works employees, and city council representatives. As such our students can expect to find jobs as:

  • Arborist (commercial, residential, municipal or utility)
  • Plant health care technician
  • Park managers (local or regional)
  • Arboretum/botanic garden technician
  • State Urban Forestry staff
  • US Forest Service Urban & Community forestry program
  • Researcher (Federal and State as well as corporate tree care companies)
  • Educator (community college, university, high school science)
